Muscle is more metabolically active than fat resulting in a higher RMR - (resting metabolic rate) You can burn approximately 50 calories more for every pound of muscle you add to your body.

In order to keep your muscle you need to make sure you are incorporating enough protein in your diet.

An average person should consume 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.  On the other hand, an athlete who performs high endurance activities should consume 1.4 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.

The amount of protein you need depends on the demand that is placed on the body.  Different activities require different amounts of protein whether it is running, playing football, playing tennis, power lifting, doing gymnastics or just walking.
